Ahmadinejad's comments came after the US defence secretary Robert Gates accused Iran of supporting Taliban insurgents. Tehran has been helping Afghanistan combat the drug trade and rebuild infrastructure. Hamid Karzai said he hoped Tehran could further help restore peace and stability in the country.
